COUNSELING

GET THE SUPPORT YOU NEED.

At Calvary Assembly Church we humbly thank you for giving us the privilege to journey with you during this season of your life. We recognize our responsibility to God, to you, and to the church as we come alongside you to learn and grow together. We have partnered with Denise Hyland, LMHC, to be able to serve you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Calvary Assembly has a unique relationship with Denise Hyland, who is a trained, licensed, Christian counselor. She uses her love of God and wisdom from the Bible, paired with counseling tools and resources, to try to help people find freedom in their lives. Please click the plus sign on the questions below to find out if this service could be a good fit for you.

What is Christian Counseling?

The Christian counseling we offer is a way of loving you as we seek to understand your struggles as you live in an imperfect world. We will see how Christ and Gospel truths apply in deeply personal and specific ways to the realities of your life so that you can live by faith in community, made possible through the power of the Holy Spirit. At Calvary Assembly, we believe Jesus powerfully transforms our individual lives, our relationships, and the world. Please read what Christian counseling is NOT:

  1.     Christian counseling is not just quoting or prescribing Bible verses and asking you for more faith and effort.
  2.     Christian counseling is not following a fixed paradigm of method and sequence, expecting the same “results” for each person.
  3.     Christian counseling is not merely teaching biblical principles in general while ignoring the specific details of each person’s story.
  4.     Requesting Christian counseling is not a sign of failure or weakness. None of us have arrived and all of us need help. Asking for help is a strength, not a weakness.
Why is Calvary Assembly offering this?

We believe that mental, emotional, and spiritual health are all connected. Our hope is to see everyone fully healed and healthy as a way to invest in our community by offering new tools and insights with a trained, Christian, mental health counselor. We view this as an investment into our community and individual lives.

What if I need Pastoral Care, not just Counseling?

Our church is grateful to also be able to offer this as well. Pastoral care focuses more on mentoring, whereas Christian counseling incorporates Biblical truths with modern psychology. We have a team of trained elders who we will do our best to connect you to. The availability is subject to change based on people’s availability. There is no cost associated with this.

What if this is not the right fit for me?

That’s ok! We have other options available as well. If you’re looking for a different counselor, we have a list of recommended counselors in the Rochester area. To receive this list, simply email office@rcalvary.org

What will my time be like?

In advance of your first counseling session you will likely have a screening phone call with Denise, during which she will determine if your needs are within her scope of practice. You will share some of your background – and talk about why you have sought out counseling. It’s both spiritual and practical. Before your first counseling session, you will fill out intake forms for Denise so that she can guide the conversation and begin to help you. See the Client Information Form above as an example of what you will be asked to fill out. Appointments are typically around 45 to 50 minutes long, though they can range from shorter to longer, depending on the conversation.

What is the typical duration of counseling?

This will vary according to your needs. Ultimately, you and Denise will make this decision collaboratively.  Sometimes one or two sessions is sufficient – and sometimes up to eight sessions is needed. Our goal is to support you in walking through your challenge(s).

What is the cost?

The cost per session is $70 (individuals) and $100 (couples). While many counselors charge between $150-$200 per session, the rate for counseling is discounted substantially (by both Denise and the church) for you because you are connected to Calvary Assembly. You do not need to be a member to access this benefit. If you are unable to afford this rate, you may apply for financial support, and our team will review your request. Please reach out to Phil@rcalvary.org or Jonathan@rcalvary.org if you need the form. Your payment or share of payment can be made directly to Denise: see her for details at denisehylandlmhc@gmail.com.

Do you accept insurance?

Denise Hyland accepts some insurances as payment; Contact Denise at denisehylandlmhc@gmail.com.

Is what I share confidential?

Yes. The information shared between you and your counselor is confidential between only you and the counselor.  Other details of confidentiality are explained in Denise’s “Notice of Privacy Practices”, which we ask you to read and sign before attending your first session. An example of the notice is displayed above.

What do I need to bring with me?

For your first session, you will be sent a link to Denise’s Therapy Portal. From there you will be prompted to fill out forms and assessments. Examples of these forms are the Notice of Privacy Practices and the Client Information Form shown above.

SUNDAYS @Second!

Sundays are about growing in faith in Jesus. Students begin in the auditorium for worship and are released after about 20 minutes to head to our lower level. Here we connect with new friends and have a non-pressured faith conversation. The experience all together lasts about 65 minutes and we hope you leave encouraged and challenged in your spiritual journey.

The first Sunday of each month, students will stay in the auditorium for the message.

WEDNESDAYS @Second!

Wednesdays are the most exciting night of the week! Every week a powerful and relevant message from scripture is preached, and students are given a chance to respond to the nights message.  Wednesdays alternate between small group nights (where students and volunteers connect by playing, learning and praying together) and worship nights (where our student led band, EMBERS, lead songs of worship and praise to Jesus).

Our messages are based out of the Bible, which we believe to be God-breathed and useful for our lives today. On Wednesday nights, we learn from engaging teaching, worship with our student team, take time to pray together or individually, and reflect on how we can become closer with our God. If you have never come, we encourage you to check it out!

My name is Steven Nichols and I am the Youth Director at Calvary Assembly! I am absolutely thrilled to be in this position and to be given the chance to work with your children and help lead them to all that God has planned for them.

I live in a neighborhood in Gates where my wife, Moriah, and I purchased our first home. When I am not actively involved in our youth  ministry, I throughly enjoy reading and training in martial arts. Moriah is an extremely gifted vocalist and piano player and can make any song sound like a billboard hit. I cannot. When we go out on dates together we both enjoy exploring the surrounding area looking for a restaurant we have not tried yet, searching for the best food our city has to offer. But for us, the best day is a simple and quiet one.

Although I am still working full time as an electrician for my father’s company, I want you to know I am available for you, for your son or daughter, and to help encourage our students towards the unique calling God has for their life! Don’t hesitate to email, call, or text me. I am looking forward to getting to know you!

Come as you are. You don’t have to dress up or pretend like you have it all together. We will meet for 65 minutes and in that time we will sing some songs about God’s love, have an engaging teaching that will encourage and challenge you, and participate in prayer that inspires you.

A lot of our lives is spent doing the SAME things. After all, we have reoccurring responsibilities. Faithfulness is the term the Bible uses for this.

There comes a time when we are called to do the NEXT thing. This
is not a call to stop doing the regular things. Rather, it is a reminder that we don’t have to be limited by them. In fact, the
NEXT thing is possible because of faithfulness. You have faithfully prayed, served, and given generously. As a result our current facility is used three times on Sunday (and throughout the week) to connect people to - and help people grow in - God’s grace.

Every week we hear stories of people daring to hope again, finding freedom, and feeling loved and accepted. And if this was all God accomplished through us, we would be glad and grateful.

But with God there is always a NEXT. There are still individuals and families who have not been exposed to the grace of God. There are still people who have disconnected from faith and have not yet found their way back home. Since God is not done with them, He is not done with us.

Our mission is to provide a safe place for people to find authentic faith, risk real relationships and discover the future God has planned for them.

Our problem - we can’t provide a safe place if we are out of space.

Beginning on the first Sunday in October our church family will begin to take the NEXT step. We cannot do this alone. The faith and finances necessary for a project of this size will require each and every person to dare to pray bold prayers and boldly respond to God’s direction.

NEXT reminds us of God’s unfailing love and unwavering effort to reach each and every one.

NEXT reminds us that our dreams can be brighter than our memories.NEXT reminds us that the best is yet to come.
